Winning Architects Honored for Best in Show and Seven Design Categories

San Diego, CA (September 24th, 2019) – LaCantina Doors (LaCantina) announced the winners of their annual architect’s design competition – Best of LaCantina 2019. Seven inspired projects, from across the country, were awarded in the following categories: Best in Show, Best Rural Residential, Best Suburban Residential, Best Urban Residential, Best Commercial, Best Compact, Best Renovation and Most Innovative, respectively.

The winning projects were judged on architectural excellence, creative design and the best of use of LaCantina door and window products to completely transform open spaces and enhance lifestyle.

“Tozer Design did a beautiful job of incorporating Biophilic Design Principles into this project,” notes Lee Maughan, General Manager, LaCantina. “This project really emphasizes the LaCantina philosophy of connecting indoor outdoor spaces all while blurring the line between people and nature.” [FA2]

Here are the standout designs from this year’s competition, projects that truly epitomize “The Best of LaCantina”.

Best in Show goes to High Desert Butterfly by Tozer Design. The architects used LaCantina’s multi slide systems to welcome winter sunshine into the Oregon residence, while protecting the interior from the high-desert summer sun. Boasting world-class, cascade mountain views through its LaCantina glass doors, High Desert Butterfly also wins the Best Rural Residential category.

River House by Sellars Lathrop Architects wins for Best Suburban Residential. LaCantina’s folding glass system was used to create a true indoor-outdoor experience in this 1950’s contemporary home. Its modern expanse of glass walls showcases an everchanging landscape of trees, sky and water.

Situated on a sloping double lot in San Francisco, Dolores Heights Residence by John Maniscalco Architecture wins Best Urban Residential for their innovative use of LaCantina’s multi slide systems. The glass doors frame the horizon, offering obstructed views of changing daylight and sweeping cityscapes.

Best Commercial project goes to Day Wines by Fieldwork Design and Architecture for their use of LaCantina multi slide and swing systems in the heart of Oregon Wine Country. This stylish winery’s tasting room is designed with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that flood the space with natural light.

Russian Hill by MacCracken Architects wins the Best Compact category for their use of LaCantina’s multi slide systems. Staggering, full-height glass doors open up the space, completely transforming this San Francisco single-family residence.

Best Renovation is awarded to Greenwood Restaurant by DMAC Architecture. The designers used LaCantina’s folding door systems to achieve a fluid dining experience for guests, seamlessly merging the indoor space with the outdoor terrace.

Most Innovative goes to Talbot McLanahan Architect for their unique Z-S Addition in Venice, California, which features LaCantina’s folding system. The glass doors let natural light into the bungalow, extending the compact space outward for a more open feel.

The Best in Show winner and a guest will travel to New York for a 3-day, 2-night trip to experience AIANY’s Archtober, a month festival to celebrate the vibrant architecture of the city.
