A three-story carriage house is renovated to reflect a harmonious blending of historic details and contemporary comforts — the very essence of a New York City townhouse. A bi-parting LaCantina folding door system with a real-wood interior and aluminum exterior was key in creating a contemporary aesthetic that works in a historical context.

The goal of the 3,500-square-foot carriage house renovation was to protect the historic character of the original townhouse while creating unique, contemporary moments throughout. The front façade was restored to its original 1925 state, while the back façade was transformed to open into a contemporary urban backyard.

Throughout the home, exposed wood, earthy tones, and subtle contemporary features appear, intentional choices that help maintain the feel of the original carriage house. The LaCantina folding door system upholds this design standard, with a beautifully finished wood interior and crisp aluminum exterior, reflecting the transition from historical to contemporary.

Portals of light were created throughout the home as a nod to the previous owner, an artist, who had built skylights and large windows for his studio. The skylights could not be saved in the renovation process due to updated building code requirements but helped inspire the design to include clever ways of bringing in natural light — including LaCantina's folding doors as well as a glass-enclosed sunken garden, accessible from the rear terrace, that draws light into the ground floor space.
